One of the many challenges for oral history is balancing collecting and archiving oral history with publishing and exhibiting recordings. Our libraries and archives have increasingly large collections of oral history and more is being recorded all the time. The National Library of Australia has recently made the podcast series The Memory Tapes from its collections. Over ten episodes Dr Shirleene Robinson has collected and contextualised voices in the collection. I’ve been working my way through the episodes and thinking what a wonderful model this is for our own national oral history collection held at the Alexander Turnbull Library in Wellington. This is no small undertaking. Working with oral history in this way is time consuming but The Memory Tapes shows what can be achieved.
